Amanda has been teaching reading for the past 10 years. She earned her undergraduate degree from Montclair State University and her graduate degree from Wheelock College In Boston. She has also earned certificates from NYU, Rutgers and Fairleigh Dickinson University. She is certified in both Reading Recovery and Orton-Gillingham. She is currently pursuing her certification as a Reading Specialist. Amanda loves to inspire her students to foster a love of reading. She feels that when taught using the right methodologies, all students have the ability to learn to read.
Alison – Early Childhood and Special Education Preschool-Early Elementary – Handwriting Expert
Alison has ten years of teaching experience in a nearby public school district. She has taught preschool, kindergarten and first grade in both general and special education. Students with learning disabilities, ADHD, and speech delays are her specialty, however she enjoys working with any student needing a little extra attention. She proudly helps her students make strong gains in their academic and social skills. Alison is also a handwriting expert having much success teaching students with and without disabilities proper handwriting habits that really stick. When she is not teaching, Alison enjoys cooking, hiking, reading and spending time with family and friends.
Amy – Biology and Chemistry
Amy has ten years of teaching experience. She has taught high school biology and chemistry, eighth grade science and is currently teaching fourth grade science at a private school in Montclair. She has a Bachelor of Arts in Biology and Chemistry from Middlebury College and a Master of Science in Natural Science from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. Amy has a great love of learning and constantly strives to deepen her knowledge of science content. In her spare time, she loves to read, walk her greyhound and hike with her family.
Cindy – Reading, Writing, College Advisory, English Language Arts
Cindy received her BA from Boston College in special/elementary education and a Masters from Montclair State University in Guidance and Counseling. She has a particular interest in how disorganization affects a student’s ability to digest and apply information.
In a former life Cindy developed a consulting practice called Chaos Control which focused upon children and adults with chronic disorganization issues. Cindy is employed as a High School guidance counselor in Essex County. She is an avid gardener and loves painting anything that is not a canvas.
David – Language Arts, Standardized Test Prep
David is an experienced tutor who specializes in verbal skills that include: SAT prep, ISEE prep, PSAT prep and GRE prep. He also tutors students in academic writing and has helped high school, college and graduate students with academic papers, thesis papers, dissertations and personal statements.
He is very strong in tutoring the basics of grammar, vocabulary and reading comprehension. He has worked as a tutor for various agencies in the Essex County area and have very strong references to support my work. His background includes a master’s degree from Columbia University.
Debbie – History, Research Specialist
Debbie has earned degrees in history from Princeton University and the University of Pennsylvania. She has also taught history at all levels, including AP, for nine years. Her specific areas of expertise are American History, the U.S. Government, and research.
For many students, the most daunting and stressful part of high school is the research paper. In her teaching, Debbie focuses on helping students develop the skills that make research easier and more successful. She can guide students through the entire process, including refining a topic, finding resources, developing a thesis statement, organizing information, writing, documentation, and perfecting the ever-painful bibliography. These skills are necessary to write good papers in any discipline, not just history.
Devon – Middle/High School Math, Business/Economics
Devon earned her undergraduate degree in Economics from the University of Virginia. After four years on Wall Street working with derivatives at Morgan Stanely, Devon decided to enter the teaching profession. She has earned her masters in Secondary School Mathematics Education from The City College of New York, summa cum laude. Currently Devon is a high school math and business teacher in New York City. She is a member of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics. Additionally, Devon is a strong proponent of literacy throughout the content areas and consistently exposes her students to mathematical concepts through reading and writing.
Erin – K-8 certified
Erin is a fourth grade teacher in Bloomfield. She graduated with a bachelors in Elementary Education from Salisbury University in 2005, and has been teaching for 7 years. Erin enjoys both reading and math. She loves helping students achieve their goals and believes that a positive and motivated atmosphere is what it takes. In her free time, she enjoys swimming, running, the beach, traveling, and spending time with friends.
Jessica – K-5 Certified Bilingual Teacher
Received my degree at Saint Peter’s College and obtaining MA degree in Education this Fall Semester (December 2011). I have been teaching in the Clifton Public School district for 6 years and have participated in many additional academic programs to help improve the education of the children in our school. I have taught with our Saturday Academy for 3 years, started a new program, Saturday Academy for our Parents, within our school to help gap the language barrier between parent and their children, and attended the University of Virginia for a Summer Workshop on differentiated instruction. In the past 6 years, I have taught grades 1-3 and ESL Adult classes for parents within our district.
I have been with Essex Tutoring for three and a half years and have tutored children in many parts of Passaic and Essex counties from all grade levels. I have done one-on-one tutoring and small group settings as well. Since I am a second classroom teacher, I have ability to use many of my classroom manipulatives for my tutoring lessons with our students. Now hoping to go back to school to become certified to teach Spanish!
Kelly – Language Arts, Reading Comprehension grades 5 – 8
Kelly is a certified NJ teacher with a specialization in Language Arts. She received her BA from Rutgers University in Journalism and is currently pursuing her Masters in education. Kelly is currently an 8th grade English teacher, specializing in reading, writing and standardized test-prep. With her students, Kelly focuses on the importance of staying organized and good time management. In her spare time, Kelly coaches soccer and track & field.
Lois – Middle School Math, Spanish, ESL, French
Lois has been employed as a certified K-8 teacher for the past nine years. This upcoming September Lois will be teaching middle school mathematics in the West New York School District. She received her bachelor’s degree from St. Thomas Aquinas College and has received graduate level credits from Fairleigh Dickinson University. Lois has also participated in extensive math-related training through programs at Middlesex College. She has been tutoring students throughout Hudson, Essex, and Bergen County for the past several years and truly enjoys helping students excel. In her spare time, Lois enjoys staying active by participating in activities such as soccer, softball, and running.
Mark – Math 1 – 8
Mark has experience teaching math in all grades from first to eighth. Before becoming a math teacher in the Bronx, Mark spent 15 years working in corporate finance in the entertainment industry. Mark has always had a passion for teaching and was tutoring throughout his corporate career. Mark feels very strongly about bringing real world scenarios into his teaching and finds that strategy is a big asset in helping students understand the general concept of mathematics. In his free time Mark enjoys the outdoors (hiking, biking, running and tennis) and traveling.
Michelle – Middle/High School Math, Standardized Test Preparation
Michelle has ten years of experience teaching math to children from 4th grade through high school. She earned her BA from Drew University and recently completed her MA in Education Administration & Supervision from St. Peter’s College. Michelle took some time outside of the classroom to work as a Director of Education at a Sylvan Learning Center where she focused on customizing math programs for students based on their initial assessment. Currently she teaches 8th grade math in Edison Township. Michelle is chairman of the Human Relations Committee and advisor of the Student Council at her school. Michelle is proficient in Russian and has knowledge of the Polish language.
Michelle – K-8 Lanuguage Arts and Math
Michelle is a professional educator with over 15 years of teaching experience in working with students Pre-K through eight. She received her undergraduate degree from Kutztown University and has a Masters in Teacher from Marygrove College. After 10 years as an elementary teacher, Michelle spent some time working as a consultant providing professional development and training to teachers in grades K – 12 in all subject areas. Recently, Michelle returned to teaching and currently works as an instructional teacher coach for Summit Public Schools. She is proud to inspire all students to work towards their full potential and specializes in brain-based learning, strengthening student retention, and teaching 21st century skills. In her spare time, Michelle loves to read, spend time with her husband and son, and make beaded jewelry.
Mara – Middle/High School Math, Standardized Test Preparation, Personal Essays
Mara became a middle school and high school certified English teacher after receiving a BA from Sarah Lawrence College in the Liberal Arts. She has experience tutoring students in critically reading and interpreting literature, writing in a variety of genres (including the personal essay and the research paper), and preparing for standardized testing and college admissions. She is pursuing a Masters in Literature at Drew University, and in her spare time enjoys travelling, gardening, and reading, of course.
Rashida Berry – Middle/High School Math/Test Preparation
Rashida has been teaching High School Mathematics for ten years. She earned her Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics and Secondary Education from Seton Hall University. She has taught everything from Pre-Algebra to Pre-Calculus throughout her teaching career. She has a great rapport with her students at Union High School and just has and overall love for children and MATH.
Shayna – K-3 General Education
Shayna has been an elementary school teacher for the past 11 years. She earned a BS in Early Childhood Education and an M.Ed. in Curriculum Theory and Development from the University of Maryland. Currently, Shayna teaches 3rd grade in Maplewood, and serves on various curriculum and assessment writing committees. She is passionate about helping students succeed academically and enjoys watching them do so. When Shayna isn’t teaching, she loves reading, playing Scrabble, and spending time with her family.
Tara – Special Education, Reading and Writing
Tara is a dually certified teacher both in elementary and special education. After teaching special education in the Paterson Public School District for over five years she became a Learning Disabilities Teaching Consultant in the Little Ferry Public School District. She can now assist teachers in the classroom by demonstrating how to better accommodate students with different and special needs. Prior to teaching, Tara spent many years working in the corporate world. Tara received her undergraduate degree in Communications from William Paterson University as well as her master’s degree in Special Education with a concentration in Learning Disabilities. Tara feels that all students can learn no matter what disability they might have. The key is to make learning both interesting and fun. The student should be able to apply what is learned in the real world. She has developed unique writing and reading strategies that have proven to be successful. In her spare time, Tara enjoys jogging, exercising, and spending time with her two dogs.
Tom – Math (6 – 12)
Tom is a NJ certified and highly qualified teacher of mathematics. He has a Bachelor of Science in Applied Mathematics from Montclair State University. In addition to working in the classroom, Tom is currently a full time Home Instruction teacher. Prior to becoming a math teacher, Tom held successful corporate positions in marketing and sales for both Sharp Electronics Corporation and North Jersey Media Group.
Tom has coached a student Math Olympics team, and has 10+ years of experience coaching youth athletics including baseball, basketball and girls softball. He truly enjoys “coaching” his students in a positive manner, helping them to learn and develop as they achieve their goals. In his spare time Tom enjoys sports and spending time with his family.
